The rehabilitation of The Roseville Tunnel by New Jersey Transit will upgrade a crucial link in the Lackawanna Cut-off restoring passenger rail service from Port Morris to a new station in Andover and ultimately to Scranton, PA. The goal of NJ Transit is to restore passenger train service to this corridor.
The rail line was originally built between 1908 and 1911 by the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad to speed service between Hoboken, NJ, and Buffalo, NY. Originally designed for freight service, the line was considered an engineering marvel in its day with deep cuts and tail fills and two large viaducts which allowed a direct line through New Jersey’s mountainous northwest region. LHV Precast manufactured two precast headwalls 20 feet long, 13’ high, and 2‘ thick with 9’- 8” half-round opening. These are supported by 25’ long precast concrete footings. The culvert is a total of 45 feet long and designed to support the trains above it. Schiavone Construction will cast in the final arch ultimately building a hybrid culvert. The culvert’s appearance will match the original keeping its historical identity.
The original design was engineered by Lewis O Morgan, PE, Director of Rail Services for Jacobs Engineering of Sparta, NJ. Precast Engineering was performed by Tamer Osman PE of @Delta Engineering of Endwell, NY. The project construction was awarded to Schiavone Construction Co. of Secaucus in May of 2022. Precast project estimation was completed by Robert Willis of LHV Precast, Inc.
