The project includes the replacement of the existing Caretakers Road Bridge over the Walloomsac River. The bridge is approximately 1,000 feet south of the intersection with Route 67 in the Town of Hoosick, Rensselaer County.
The site work and construction were performed by William J Keller and Sons of Castleton, NY. The bridge abutments and wingwalls were replaced with Stone Strong retaining wall blocks with a new bridge seat poured. The steel was then laid and the truss was refurbished and replaced. Modern strength with traditional beauty and form.
The new single-lane structure was designed to be able to accept a timber cover in the future to replicate the original covered bridge that was located at the same crossing in the early 1800s. The substructure consists of pre‐cast modular bin‐type walls with an architectural laid‐up stone finish supported by a concrete-filled steel micropile foundation. The project also includes the reconstruction of 420 ft of roadway extending from the railroad tracks to the intersection with Cottrell Road.
